Finally there is a viable choice to paying around $40 every month for your cell phone basic fee. Net10 has a minimum monthly charge of fifeen dollars – plus No Contract! Net10 also sells a fantastic variety of grealty reduced Mobile phones, from $19.99. To see Net10phones, click HERE .

The big boys in this arena; AT&T, Verizon, Blackberry all have similar cell phone plans that charge the user a basic monthly cost of around forty dollors – which includes a varying number of usage, and then charge other fees for minutes at different times and with different fee structures (see table below).

But now it is possible to go with pay as you go plans similar to the one Net10 has. There is also a monthly fee, but in the example of Net10, it begins at $15/month which is for 2.5 hours of call time. So that works out at a per minute rate of 10c – and that is the cost no matter how much time you use.

But 150 minutes a month is not much call time- only about 5 minutes per 24 hours – but it is easy to add on time either via the internet, via a toll free number or at many of large retail stores like Walmart, Target and Kmart. For details of all stores, click on one of the links in the first paragraph.

To keep any account active, you must get a minimum of $15/month (150 mins). If, for some reason, you do not use the minimum requirement of minutes, any unused minutes willroll over, so you don’t lose any.

Service is all all over the US, with a few small exceptions- like rural Alaska – just like every Cell phone plan.

The mobile phone market has become split into three distinct customer groups, contract mobile phone customers, pay as you go customers, and most recently sim only contract mobile customers.

The 1st group are the foundation for the companies, minimum term contract mobile subscribers. Until the last few years, phones were usually sold on 12 month contracts, with the advantage for customers being that they got a free handset when agreeing to a contract. Popular since the mid nineties, the yearly contract is still a common choice now, although 18 month and 24 month contract packages are gaining popularity all the time. The reasons for this are primarily twofold, firstly handsets seem to last longer these days, particularly in terms of battery lifetime. It used to be commonplace that by the end of your annual contract, your phone might not even hold its charge for 24 hours, or in some cases you might have needed to buy a replacement battery before your contract completed! The second reason for the growth of the eighteen month and 24 month contracts is the free gifts. By agreeing to a longer term contract, you can expect to receive a free laptop or games console on some deals, on top of your free minutes and text allowance. Even if you don’t go for a free gift option, you will normally find the minutes and texts bundled with your handset are much more generous compared to the monthly cost of a shorter yearly option.

Free sim cards are available on the main mobile networks.

The second user group is the opposite end of the spectrum – no minimum term contract and call time and messages are paid for ad hoc, usually in denominations of £5, £10 or twenty pounds. The obvious target user for this model is children – unable to apply for credit and therefore unable to access the contract mobile phones unless an adult signs up for them. Interestingly, the over 18′s make up for the majority of the prepay market – demonstrating the appeal of the pay as you go offering against the cheaper per minute and per text contract.

Lastly, the latest arrival to the marketplace is the Sim only deal – a contract which usually lasts a minimum of 30 days, and then rolls month to month. It is primarily targetted at the sector of the market with existing mobile phones that arent bothered about getting the latest and greatest handset, instead looking for the best value service. This marks a clear shift in the marketplace to value for money in inclusive calltime and messaging, whereas a lot of marketing spend has previously been aimed at the latest mobiles and the most advanced funcationality.

Sim-only deals.
