Sony Ericsson is a joint venture established on October 3, 2001 by the Japanese consumer electronics company Sony Corporation and the Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson to make mobile phones. The company has its headquarters in Sweden and London, UK. The company has its research and development teams in Sweden, China, Japan, the US, Germany, Pakistan, India, and Great Britain.

The market success recipe for Sony Ericsson mobiles came from the huge experience in communications specific to Ericsson and the highly advanced technologies powered by Sony. As a result both companies stopped producing separate brands for their own mobile phones. Due to their policy and seriousness, by 2008, the company was the fifth largest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world. Sony Ericsson comes after companies like Motorola, LG, Nokia and Samsung. Sony Ericsson’s sales of products very much increased after the launch on the market of the Walkman and Cyner-shot series.

Among the numerous Sony Ericsson’s products, we ought to count wireless voice devices, hi-tech accessories, mpbile music systems and many others besides phones alone. The company’s revenue was €11,244 million in 2008 and its net income in the same year was €73 million. In July 2008, Sony Ericsson had 9,400 employees lead by Nelson Mozol (President), Anders Runevad (EVP) and Carl-Henric Svanberg (Chairman). Sony corporation has 50% of the company with the other half belonging to Ericsson AB.

As we’ve already said, Sony Ericsson started being incredibly successful with Walkman and cyber-shot. In 2005, on March 1, the company released the K750i incorporating a 2 megapixel camera and W800i, its platform mate, the first in the highly successful Walkman phones. The performance of this telephone was its capability of playing 30 hours of music playback and two low-end phones. In October 2005, P990 was launched, which made the first device relying on UIQ 3 technology. The other major achievement that Sony Ericsson fulfilled was the Cyber-shot brand, launched in 2005 by the K750.

K750 in fact proved one of the best sold Sony Ericsson’s cells ever made. Back then, the memory card space was very innovative, which would explain the success. The difference between the Walkman and the Cyber-shot stands in the quality of the media viewing and cameras which is higher in the Cyber-shot. Sony Ericsson has further developed five of the largest categories of products : the W Walkman series music phones, the Cyber-shot mobiles, the BRAVIA-branded collection, the UIQ smart phone line of mobiles, and the Xperia range of mobile phones.

Sony and Ericsson brought a unique trait to the Sony cell phone as a product that won the market of mobile communications. Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita were the founders of the Sony Corporation, although they did not envisage the creation of the Sony cell phone. The company’s headquarters are at Minato, Tokyo, Japan. As a corporation, Sony services a huge electronics market that includes not only phones but video stations, TV sets, computers, semiconductors, play stations and other consumer electronics as well. In 2008 the company’s operating income was US$ 4 billion and their revenue was US$ 100 billion. Plus, the number of employees working in Sony facilities worldwide was around 180,000.

Historically speaking, Sony maintains a high quality standard in the storage and recording items they provide, as they did not adopt those discoveries issued by other manufacturers and standard bodies. The standard products designed and manufactured over the years include Umatic (~1968), Betamax (1975), Betacam (81), Compact Disc (82), 3.5 inch Floppy Disk (82), Video8 (85), DAT (87), Hi8 (88), Minidisc (~90), Digital Betacam (~90), miniDV (92), Memory Stick (98), Digital8 (99), PSP Universal Media Disc (~2003), HDV (~2004), Blu-ray Disc (2006). So, Sony is mainly known for these consumer  electronics rather than for cell phones which they started developing in cooperation with Ericsson only. Therefore, although you may refer to them as Sony cell phone products, you would actually discuss Sony Ericsson phones.

After their association, Sony and Ericsson became famous in the field of cell phone design due to their Walkman and Cyber-shot phones, getting to the fifth place among the top companies of the world, after LG, Nokia, Samsung and Motorola. The most famous Walkman mobiles were by far K750i and W800i, each with a great music playback range and two low-end phones included; both mobiles were launched in March 2005. No later than October in the same year, another Sony cell phone – the P990 – was released, being the first mobile phone based on UIQ 3.

Another successful Sony cell phone belongs from the Cyber-shot brand. This one – the K750, was also launched in 2005 and made record sales. Unlike the Walkman which had a very good media package but a poor camera, the Cyber-shot phone included both great cameras and decent viewing media.
