These days, it’s not only grown-ups that are hooked on getting the latest cellular phones; complete with the latest in technology; coolest features and all the available applications that can be crammed into one small cellphone gadget.

Children too, have become hooked, for lack of a better term, to cellphones. They see their moms and dads clutching the coolest cellphone known to man and they want to have the same too; not only for its various applications but more so to show-off to their friends. It conveys some kind of statement for kids when they have the same stylish gadgets like everybody else.

SHOULD YOU ALLOW YOUR CHILD {TO OWN} A CELLPHONE?

What happens then when your child start to ask for a phone? Should you just concede without a second thought? There’s no doubt that young kids should really not be allowed to own a cellphone just yet. But for the older children, it totally depends on the parents’ judgment.

Cellphones are essential for communication and if you’re away most of the time and your children happen to be out too; with their peers or some school activity; getting in contact with them each time both parents and kids are apart is important. Cellular phones will definitely make this simpler for everyone.

In addition, cell phones can be very useful also to children in times of emergencies.

TRAINING CHILDREN TO BE RESPONSIBLE

One way to turn this cellphone ownership subject into something positive is training children how to be responsible cellphone owners. Setting parameters as to their usage is an essential element when considering giving kids their own cellphones. While listening to music and taking pictures may be some of the things that children want to be able to do with their cellphones; permitting them to browse the internet or chat without parental supervision should be something parents need to think twice about.

In this case, getting them a phone with only the bare essentials could be the answer. Also, giving these cellphones as rewards for doing well in class will teach children that they have to show good behavior in order to be allowed to have their own phones.

Finally, one way to also teach them about responsibility is training them to put aside allowance so they can buy their own prepaid loads; or both parents and children can split the cost of the phone. There are many ways for parents to get something positive from these tools.
